An Awesome Day Growing the Game in Charleston

Charleston Youth Hockey Association hosted another Try Hockey For Free event this weekend, and it was nothing short of incredible. More than 70 excited kids hit the ice—many for the very first time—ready to experience the greatest game on earth. From big smiles to first strides, the energy in the rink was electric from start to finish.

A huge part of this success came from our dedicated community. Over 10 CYHA coaches volunteered their time to help guide players through their first hockey experience. Their patience, enthusiasm, and love for the sport created a welcoming environment for every child who stepped onto the ice. Whether it was teaching how to balance, showing how to hold a stick, or encouraging those first confident glides, our coaches played a massive role in making the day special.

We were also thrilled to have a special guest: Cool Ray, the South Carolina Stingrays’ mascot, who brought the fun to a whole new level. High-fives, photos, and lots of laughter made Cool Ray a highlight for many young participants. Our continued partnership with the Stingrays adds a professional hockey flair to these events, and we’re grateful for their support in growing youth hockey in Charleston.

Events like Try Hockey For Free are essential to introducing new families to the sport, building confidence, and showing kids just how exciting hockey can be. Seeing so many new faces on the ice—and so many eager to come back—reminds us why we do what we do.

Thank you to all the players, families, coaches, and volunteers who made this day unforgettable. We can’t wait to see these new hockey stars back at the rink soon!
