This week was a truly special one for the Charleston Youth Hockey Association, as players and coaches were treated to an unforgettable conversation with NHL legend Torey Krug. Torey shared stories, lessons, and wisdom from a career built on resilience, determination, and love for the game; leaving every player in the room motivated and energized.
From the moment Torey walked in the room and started to speak, it was clear how fortunate we were to have him. He spoke openly about growing up around the sport, overcoming challenges as a young undersized defenseman, and the hard work it took to rise through youth hockey, juniors, Michigan State, and ultimately into the NHL. His message was honest, authentic, and perfectly tailored to young athletes navigating their own hockey journeys.
Torey’s storytelling was awesome, sharing some of his favorite childhood memories, the moment he realized he had a real shot at the NHL, and what it felt like to play in some of the biggest games in the world.
What stood out most was Torey’s genuine desire to help our next generation of players. He encouraged them to love the game, stay coachable, take pride in small daily habits, and understand that success comes from consistency—not shortcuts. He emphasized the importance of being a great teammate and reminded our kids that adversity is part of the journey, not a reason to get discouraged.
For our association, having a player and person of Torey Krug’s caliber spend time with our athletes is something we’ll remember for a long time. His words carried weight, his presence inspired confidence, and his message will fuel the work our players put in on and off the ice this season and beyond.
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to host Torey and thankful for the example he set.
On behalf of the CYHA. Thank you, Torey Krug, for giving our kids an experience they’ll never forget!
